SEOUL, South Korea, January 29, 2009— A Korean government-run health agency has issued an immediate warning to South Korea and the U. S. about an unusually high rate of sexual dysfunction and erectile dysfunction (ED) in women. "The Korean Central for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported a low rate of sexual dysfunction in women treated with oral and IV erectile dysfunction medications," the agency said in a statement. "However, sexual dysfunction has been reported in a small percentage of women using drugs for erectile dysfunction."
According to the FDA, an estimated 1.4 million women in South Korea are living with ED. It is not known if these women have taken any drug or other forms of ED. The agency noted that "these patients are at increased risk for other sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and syphilis."
According to a Korean expert, a Korean doctor who reviewed the data indicated that "the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women treated with an oral or IV drug for erectile dysfunction has increased since 2003 to over 9,000, and a similar number of men were prescribed a higher dose of oral erectile dysfunction medications. The rate of sexual dysfunction in women taking drugs for erectile dysfunction was also reported to be about 10 times higher than the rate reported in a clinical trial involving a placebo group."
"This is the second report about the high rate of sexual dysfunction in women who have received a single oral or IV drug," said Dr. Han Jiun-urtle, a board-certified sexual health specialist at the Korean Society for Sexual Medicine.
The study was part of an FDA-funded study of clinical trials for the drug Viagra (sildenafil citrate) for erectile dysfunction and the drug Cialis (tadalafil). The study was part of a study to compare the safety and efficacy of Viagra and Cialis to other oral ED medications.
A previous study of more than 5 million women in Korea found a higher rate of erectile dysfunction among men who took the drugs. The Korean study compared the incidence of men who used these drugs to the rates of men who did not. The Korean study found that men who took drugs for erectile dysfunction had more problems with sexual arousal, orgasm, and sexual arousal. In addition, a study published in the journalSexual Medicinefound that men who took a combination of ED drugs with Cialis were at a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke compared with men who took drugs for ED only.
According to the Korean study, men who took ED drugs were about 10 times more likely to have sexual arousal disorders than men who did not take the drugs. The risk of a heart attack or stroke was about twice as high in men who took drugs for erectile dysfunction or the combination of ED drugs with Cialis.
The FDA is also reviewing the results of an international clinical trial conducted by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to compare the safety of Viagra and Cialis for men who are taking ED drugs. The study found that there is a "significant increase" in the risk of a stroke. "The increase in the incidence of stroke among men taking the combination of these drugs with Cialis is consistent with the results of the FDA and the clinical trials of other drugs for erectile dysfunction," the FDA said in the statement.
Since the FDA-sponsored study was carried out, a number of men have filed lawsuits in the United States for sexual dysfunction. The FDA-sponsored clinical trial, led by Dr. Seok-Hyeon Lee, was the largest of its kind, and was launched in Korea on January 24, 2009. The drug company, Lilly, has been accused of misleading consumers by promoting ED drugs as safer, cheaper, and more effective.
A Korean doctor, Han Ha-kwan, has been investigated for fraud and money laundering. He is also the head of the Korea Sexual Medicine Society (KSSM) and a spokesman for the Korean sexual medicine association. The Seoul-based Korean sexual medicine association and the Korean sexual medicine clinic are conducting a clinical trial to compare the two drugs.
The trial's results are being reported in theSouth Korean Medical JournalandMedical Journal of South Korea.

The company's patent for Viagra has expired, but it will soon be available for purchase as an over-the-counter medication in pharmacies and even on the market. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it's now taking steps to make the drug more accessible and affordable.
Last month, the FDA approved the first tablet of its over-the-counter treatment, which comes in a variety of strengths.
The drug will be available in pharmacies in seven countries: Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Australia, according to the agency.
Viagra has been around for as long as the drug's patent expired in the United States, but the FDA says its product has been available since 1999.
In February, Pfizer said it had approved the first tablet of the drug, which costs around $35 for a month's supply, to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The FDA says the drug is designed to be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men, but it also provides some protection for the heart.
The drug has also been on the market in other countries as well, like China, and it is available in the United States for a fee.
If approved, the drug would be available in pharmacies in many countries and could be sold directly to consumers in pharmacies, according to the agency.
Pfizer's Viagra, which has just been launched in China and is due to be sold in pharmacies in four countries: Thailand, Hong Kong, Philippines and Taiwan, has a patent on its product, which expires in the middle of next month. The FDA says its product has been available since 1999.It's not clear how much Viagra will be available in China and other countries. It's also not clear whether other drug manufacturers will make a similar purchase.
Pfizer has been selling its Viagra in Europe for several years, and it is expected to sell the drug in many other countries in the coming months.
Last week, Pfizer announced that it would be recalling two batches of its Viagra, and in a similar way, it said it will temporarily stop the sale. This comes after a study found that patients taking Viagra in the U. S.
According to the FDA, the FDA found that more than 80 percent of U. men over the age of 40 experience erectile dysfunction, which can affect a man's ability to get or keep an erection.
Some doctors may have to prescribe Viagra for other reasons, including for a "problem-free" use of the drug, they said.
In addition, some Viagra manufacturers are now selling over-the-counter medicines in countries where the FDA has not yet approved them.
In the United States, Pfizer said it will continue to promote the drug.
The company said it will only be able to sell the product in certain countries where the FDA has not yet approved it. For example, it can only sell the drug in countries in Asia and Africa where the FDA has not yet approved it.
The FDA says Pfizer's Viagra is currently only available in four countries where the FDA has not yet approved it. However, it's also important to note that the FDA doesn't approve any medication for the treatment of ED.
In its response to questions, Pfizer said it was "not aware of any of these studies that have been conducted in China, India, Japan or Australia."
The drug is already available in the United States for an extra $10 a month for a month's supply.

On Friday, the United States released a public statement saying that the Food and Drug Administration has seized more than $500 million of shipments from China and other countries of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The statement said the drugs "are entering into the global market as a result of an agreement with the FDA."
Viagra, a brand-name drug, is FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man cannot get or keep a hard, erect penis suitable for sexual activity.
The statement said "Viagra" was the name of a package that had been seized by customs officers in China. The package was addressed to a China-based company.
The statement said the FDA has advised China to withdraw the package and seized other shipments that were not part of the package.
FDA's analysis of the package found the products contained "an unknown quantity of sildenafil," the active ingredient in Viagra, a brand-name drug.
Viagra is sold under the brand name Revatio and is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Viagra was first used by men in the United States in 1998 and was approved by the FDA in 2003.
The agency said the FDA is reviewing the package, which it said was found to contain "an unknown quantity of sildenafil."
The agency also said it's reviewing the package with respect to shipments of Viagra that are intercepted by Customs and Border Protection.
